Laser Treatment for Toenail Fungus

There is a growing body of research studies and clinical evaluations by physicians around the world that demonstrates a very high efficacy (success rate) for treating toenail fungus by laser. Several devices are now being used throughout the U.S and many practitioners agree laser treatment is the best option available.

Dr. Ross now provides patented laser technology to safely and effectively treat toenail fungus. Unlike topical medication or oral drugs which may merely suppress the infection, this laser technology actually kills the microbes that cause toenail fungus. Treatment takes about 15-20 minutes and does not produce any side effects.

This patented laser technology, using a near infra red beam of light is specially designed to painlessly shine through your toenail to vaporize the pathogens without harming the nail or surrounding tissue. A patented temperature sensor on the laser controls precisely the temperature needed to destroy the fungus, yeast or mold causing the infection thus preventing any surrounding temperature increase to cause pain or damage tissue. Some patients note a slight warmth at the end of the toes but none have reported pain requiring medication, sedation or anesthesia.

When an appointment is scheduled, Dr. Ross will perform an initial history and physical examination of your feet and legs. He will thoroughly examine all ten toenails and discuss his findings and all of your treatment options. If toenail fungus is confirmed, the laser treatment will be performed on all ten toenails. This insures the eradication of any infection which may not yet be visible. In some cases prior to laser treatment, where the nail is found to be thick and deformed, the nail may be trimmed and filed thin to allow better penetration of the laser light beam. This also is a painless process requiring no medication sedation or anesthesia.

A follow-up appointment is scheduled for one month later at which time the procedure is performed again. Recent studies show that most cases of toenail fungus require two to four treatments for complete success. At the end of the second treatment prevention tips will be discussed and recommendations made.

A third visit will then be scheduled for two months later at which time the nails will be checked for improvement. A third treatment may be provided if necessary.

Studies have shown this patented laser technology to have a success rate of 88-90% (much higher than the topical or oral medication) and a re-occurrence rate of 5-10%, (much lower than the topical or oral medication) Unlike the oral medications the laser does not require blood testing, has no interactions with any medications and has no risk of liver toxicity or allergic reactions.

As stated the laser kills the fungus under the toenail. The laser has no effect on the nail itself. A patient will therefore see no immediate change in the appearance of the nail. As the nail continues to grow however a healthy nail will progress from the cuticle area eventually eliminating the discolored or deformed portion of nail. A full nail growth (from cuticle to tip) can take 9-12 months so no significant changes in the nail appearance can be expected for 2-3 months.

The treatment is quick and painless, performed as an out-patient in the doctor's office. There are no drugs or anesthesia required. There is no down time, walk in and walk out. Nail polish and shoes can be worn immediately after treatment. Patients can immediately resume pedicures or self care of there toenails or continue with professional care as they choose.

There are no age or health restrictions or limitations. Clinical studies have shown no adverse reactions, injuries, disabilities or known side effects.
